How to Choose the Right Squash Racket

So, let’s take a look at your favorite professional men and women squash players and see what their choice of rackets are.

Mohamed ElShorbagy

The greatly popular Egyptian squash player, Mohamed ElShorbagy, has gone through different rackets over his career, switching off, for example, from the Carboflex 130 Basalt to his current Tecnifibre Carboflex 125. The Carboflex 125 model is an incredibly popular model among pro squash players.

  • Construction: Graphite and Basaltex (Basalt)
  • Weight: 125g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Head Light

After using the slightly heavier Carboflex 130 Basalt, ElShorbagy has gone with a lighter 125g racket but has stuck with the Basalt frame construction. Basaltex is essentially cooled-off lava, which is great for a more durable and stronger racket. This is ideal for attack players like ElShorbagy.

Recently, however, the Carboflex 125 has been succeeded by the new Tecnifibre model, the Tecnifibre Carboflex 125 S.

  • Construction: Graphite and Basaltex
  • Weight: 125g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Head Light
  • String Pattern: 14 x 18

Marwan ElShorbagy

Egyption player Marwan ElShorbagy, deviates some from other pro players on the circuits, and has signed with Harrow. In 2016, Marwan used the Harrow Silk Squash Racket. Marwan prefers a much heavier racket than most pro players do, at a heavy 145g (while most pros are playing with 120g, 125g, and around 135g tops).

  • Construction: Carbon Graphite
  • Weight: 145g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Even
  • String Pattern: 14 x 18
  • String: (not known, but this model comes pre-strung with T200 string)
  • Recommended Tension: 26 to 30 lbs

The Silk by Harrow has a nice, light head feel, a long teardrop sweetspot, and impressive power behind this strong racket. While heavy for some pros, this Harrow is constructed with an optimal weight and balance that is perfect for players like Marwan ElShorbagy who have great maneuverability.

Nour El Sherbini

Nour El Sherbini is an incredible Egyptian female squash player whose sponsor, Tecnifibre, has given her an edge and complemented her incredible gameplay on the court with the Tecnifibre Carboflex 130.

  • Construction: Graphite and Basaltex (Basalt)
  • Weight: 130g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Even
  • String Pattern: 14 x 18
  • String: 305 Green String Tecnifibre

Just like the Carboflex 125, the Carboflex 130 has been succeeded by the new model, the Carboflex 130 S.

Nick Matthew

Nick Matthew, the popular pro player from England uses the Dunlop Aerogel 4D Evolution 120 racket.

The Dunlop Aerogel 4D Evolution is the lightest racket in this range and has a frame weight of only 120g — the lightest that Dunlop has ever produced. The frame is handcrafted, features a teardrop head design for incredible power, but still offers string bed control through the small bridge that is located in the throat.

Nick Matthew Specs:

  • Construction: 4D Aerogel
  • Weight: 120g
  • Head Size: 490 cm sq.
  • Balance: Head Light
  • String: M-Fil TS
  • String Pattern: 14 x 18
  • String Tension: 20/30 lbs

The Evolution is not just for pros either — this racket is diverse and gives players of all standards the ability to utilize a lightweight power racket with maneuverability and decent control.

Paul Coll

The young Paul Coll of New Zealand, was signed into a 3 year sponsorship with Eye squash rackets in 2016.

Coll plays with the Eye V.Lite 125 Control, which is a light, teardrop shaped racket with a fan string pattern. This gives the V.Lite more power. In addition to Paul Coll using this racket, a special edition was made for player Mazen Hesham, called the “Black Falcon.”

  • Weight: 125g
  • Head Size: 477 cm sq.
  • Balance: Even
  • String: Nylon (recommended is the X.Tech 1.15/1.20)
  • String Pattern: Fan Shaped – 14 x 18

As the name suggests, the 125 Control offers more control on the court via the fan shaped string pattern. It is also highly maneuverable, features an open throat, and is lightweight — perfect for a pro. The extended string pattern and thinner shaft offers a distributed weight from the center through to the top of the racket. The generous sweet spot and forgiving frame gives it a great feel and touch.

Camille Serme

Camille Serme of France has been blazing a trail across her path during the 2016/2017 year in tournaments around the world during the PSA Tour. This incredible player is sponsored by Prince and uses the Prince Pro Rebel 950 racket.

  • Construction: High Modulus Graphite
  • Head Size: 464 cm sq.
  • Weight: 135g
  • Balance: Head Heavy
  • String Pattern: 16 x 16

With a smaller head size but a head heavy balance, the Pro Rebel 950 weighs 135g, features a 16×16 string pattern, and is a much different racket than most men and women pros play on the squash circuit. Serme’s gameplay and racket are different than your typical pro player, and perhaps that is the secreit to her success — embracing her unique style.

Ramy Ashour

Just like Nick Matthew and a quite a few of the top squash players, Egyptian Ramy Ashour also uses Dunlop brand rackets. In fact, he has recently signed with the brand and is currently using the Dunlop Aerogel 4D Max.

The Aerogel 4D Max racket is perfect for advanced and intermediate players alike. It gives the player some incredible power through the tear drop head shape and long main strings. The braiding of the 4D offers the control and stability, which is not often found in a squash racket that boasts power above all else.

Ramy Ashour Specs:

  • Construction: Aerogel / 4D
  • Weight: 137g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Head Light
  • String Pattern: 14 x 19
  • String: M-Fil TS

Ramy is known for his attacks on the court and he loves to volley and take the ball short. In his hands, this heavier, 137g racket is right at home for him to use his famous handwork to shoot from any place on the court.

Laura Massaro

Laura Massara, one of the top 5 ladies squash players in England, is very open to trying out new rackets in quick succession – especially Head Xenon 135 rackets. She tends to prefer small head sizes (460 cm sq.) as well as head heavy rackets around 135g in frame weight.

The following Xenons are models that Laura Massaro has used in the last year and a bit beyond from the 2014/2015 season.

Head Graphene Xenon 135

This top of the line Head-brand racket line is heavily favored by Laura Massaro and she has consistently used a ton of rackets from this line. The specs for the Xenon 135 she used are as follows:

  • Weight: 135g
  • Balance: Head Heavy
  • Head Size: 460 cm sq.
  • String Pattern: 14 x 16

Head Graphene XT Xenon 135 Slim Body (SB)

Laura did try out the Slim Body briefly, but she settled moved on pretty quickly. Both Massaro and Jenny Duncalf used this racket during their matches at the 2015 British Nationals.

  • Construction: Graphene XT (and slim body beam – 16mm)
  • Weight: 135g
  • Balance: Even
  • Head Size: 475 cm sq.
  • String: Evolution Pro/Grip HydroSorb Pro
  • String Pattern: 14 x 17

It would be speculation only, but since the Slim Body model features an even balance as opposed to her favored head heavy balance, she may have not liked the feel of this racket as much. In addition, it is 15 cm sq larger in head size (she prefers 460 cm sq.), so it is not surprising that she moved on to a new Xenon model by Head.

When she used this model, it did not have the Adaptive String Pattern technology, however, if you are interested, the 2017 model of this SB does have ASP (14 x 17 and 18 x 17).

In addition to Laura Massaro and Jenny Duncalf, Omar Mossad used this racket at El Gouna in 2015, Nafiizwan Adnan used it at the 2015 British Open, Zahed Mohamed used it during the British Open, and Peter Creed played with this racket during the 2015 World Championships. 2015 was definitely a good year for the Slim Body, but not a right fit for Laura Massaro.

Head Xenon 2 135 (full name: Head YouTek Xenon2 135). Laura Massaro used this racket against Nicol David in the Qatar Classic.

  • Weight: 135g
  • Balance: Head Heavy
  • Head Size: 460 cm sq.

Head Graphene XT Xenon 135 AFP is the 2016 model Laura used — (AFP stands for Adaptive Fan Pattern). This is confirmed to be Massaro’s latest racket, which she unveiled through her Twitter account. With the Head Xenon’s Adaptive Fan Pattern stringing option, you can string this racket up different ways to suit your style. This model came out in July of 2016.

Amr Shabana

The great Egyptian player Amr Shabana follows in Ramy Ashour’s footstops and uses a Dunlop Aerogel racket as well. A player know to have great technique and a love for attacks on the court, Shabana uses the Dunlop Aerogel 4D Ultimate squash racket.

As a player who held the #1 spot longer than any other active player on the PSA Tour, Shabana uses racket with a weight in between that of Nick Matthew and Ramy Ashour — 132g. With a widened throat area, a 16 x 19 string pattern, and oversized head for maximum power, this Dunlop is head light and perfect for players who prefer a longer handle.

  • Construction: Aerogel / 4D
  • Weight: 132g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Head Light
  • String: Dunlop M-Fil TS
  • String Pattern: 16 x 19

This racket suits advanced and intermediate players looking for a head light pro-level player frame that offers serious power.

James Willstrop

One of the most well-respected squash players in the world for many years, James Willstrop of England signed with Unsquashable, a brand that legendary Jahangir Khan has become involved with, as he used it himself through his record-breaking career.

Currently, Willstrop is using the Unsquashable Y-Tec Pro. This 130-gram has an even balance and great weight for both superior control and power. Not only does James Willstrop use this racket, but Richie Fallows was also seen using this same model at the 2016 British Nationals.

The Y-Tec Pro model may have been superseded by the teardrop-shaped, 125g James Willstrop Autograph by Unsquashable, because the Y-Tec Pro is no longer listed on the brand’s website.

Before signing with Unsquashable, James Willstrop used a range of rackets in the past couple of years, including the Prince Pro Beast 750 and the Prince Pro Tour 850. He favored the Green Tecnifibre strings for the Prince rackets and while the new James Willstrop Autograph is out, he still uses the Y-Tec Pro model as far as we know.

Daryl Selby

Daryl Selby of England uses his signature Black Knight Ion Element PSX Daryl Selby racket. This racket is definitely one of the heaviest used by a pro in the circuit, at 155g. Don’t get confused — while it seems as if this racket is an extension of the similarly named Black Knife Ion Element PSX, but it actually seems to be a newer version of the Magnum Corona 6

Selby’s Black Knight is 5g heavier than the standard PSX and the frame weight and dynamic weight are the same as the Magnum Corona 6 model. His racket is also more powerful than the standard PSX.

  • Construction: Thin-K Technology
  • Nano Crystaline Technology
  • Weight: 155g
  • Balance: Even / Head Light (to handle)
  • Head Size: 475 cm sq.
  • String: UltraNick 18 – Light Blue, 1.15mm  (PowerNick 19 for extra bite on the ball)
  • 16K Hyper Tensile FIber (HTF)
  • Daryl Selby String Tension: 29 lbs
  • Power Surge technology (for reduced vibration)
  • Power of 6

Daryl has used this racket at the HK Open and many other tournaments. His strings, the UltraNick 18 were also seen on his Corona 6 that he used in the 2014 British Open and subsequent games after the fact.

Karim Abdel Gawad

Gaza-born Egyptian player Karim Abdel Gawad has been using Harrow rackets for years. His racket of choice as of January 24, 2017, is the Harrow Vibe. The vibe was originally created as a lighter version of the Harrow Mojo, and now comes in different versions and styles, including the Harrow Vibe — Karim Abdel Gawad Signature. This signature, custom racket is 140g strung (very light), is head heavy, and sports a 14 x 18 string pattern.

  • Weight: 140g (strung up)
  • Balance: Head Heavy (370mm)
  • String Pattern: 14 x 18
  • Strings: T300

Gawad is more consistent in his racket choices than most players. He has been using the Vibe since he started playing with Harrow in 2012. The flexibility, weight, balance, and grip are all aspects that he has cited as being helpful to his game. He recommends it to players who likes the short game, too.

Alison Waters

Alison Waters, an incredible squash player respected the world over, is the only one on this list to use Salming rackets; and it seems to be suiting her quite well. She has also used the Dunlop Biomimetic Evolution 120, a choice for many women in the WSA pro tour including: Sarah Kippax and Madeline Perry of Ireland.

The Dunlop Biomimetic is head light, weighs in at 120g, and was used by Waters at the 2013 British Open. this model has since been replaced by the Dunlop Force Evolution 120.

As of late, Salming is Waters’ racket of choice, and she has used different models from the Cannone, Forza, etc…While her racket is sponsored by Salming (since 2015) she uses Ashaway strings on her customized Salming gear.

Her preferences on her Salming rackets are a 120g weight, head light balance, and Ashaway strings.

Greg Gauthier

French player Gregory Gauthier uses a Dunlop Aerogel 4D Elite. This frame is good looking, offers plenty of power, and is head light — perfect for a pro.The frame profile and widened throat area means that you can swing for optimal power while maintaining a great sweet spot. The oversize head and longer handle is popular among pros who prefer Dunlop, and this is no exception.

  • Construction: Aerogel / 4D
  • Weight: 135g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Head Light
  • String: Dunlop M-Fil TS
  • String Pattern: 14 x 19

With a 135g weight, Gauthier and other top players are largely foregoing the 120g rackets in favor of Dunlop’s mid-weight power rackets.

Nouran Gohar

The up and coming #2 ranked Egyptian player, Nouran Gohar has impressed everyone with her incredible gameplay during the 2016/2017 tournament year. Gohar’s preferred racket is the Carboflex 130 Basalt. The Tecnifibre Carboflex line is a hugely popular one among pro players.

Nouran’s choice of the Basalt (which is literally cooled-off lava) is a great choice for serious power, durability, and stiffness.

  • Construction: Graphite and Basaltex (Basalt)
  • Weight: 130g
  • Head Size: 500 cm sq.
  • Balance: Even
  • String: Green 305 String Tecnifibre
  • String Pattern: 14 x 18

Fares Dessouky also uses the Carboflex 130 Basalt model as well. So does Henrik Mustonen, Miguel Rodriguez, and before he switched, Mohamed ElShorbagy used it as well. For female players, Nour El Sherbini uses the Carboflex 130 and uses the same 305 Green String Tecnifibre.
